2 RE.A.L. talks at first ever agency barcamp

For the first time in Germany, there was a barcamp dedicated entirely to creative and digital agencies.

On day one, I gave a talk on RE.A.L.—and the reaction was everything at once: excitement, approval, amazement. The presentation sparked so many discussions that I was invited to give the talk again on day two.

This time, I split the session:
First, a 15-minute RE.A.L. crash course to catch up anyone who missed the original, then a deep dive into the practical implications and real-world applications with the full group.

Honestly, I wasn’t sure whether the BarCamp format would work for the agency world. But: Respect! The result was stunning. Incredibly high-level, curious, open, engaged – Germany’s agency scene is more innovative and bold than many people give it credit for.

Further information + feedback from participants:

The 1st Agency Camp surprised, captured, excited and inspired all participants. In 64 sessions over two days, 100 agency owners, managers, specialists and freelancers engaged in intensive discussions at this unconference. Of these, 80% were Barcamp first-timers.

Below is just some of the feedback we found online from participants at RE.A.L:

Agency without contracts

The presentation RE.A.L was even more radical. (Raw Estimates, Lean and Agile). Sven Ditz presented a model for agencies in which many time-consuming tasks such as writing detailed offers and contracts were simply abolished. Departments in the traditional sense were dissolved and teams were set up, ... The agency sitegeist has been using this model for 1.5 years and has only discovered advantages for itself. The model also provided material for discussion between the sessions, particularly the question of how far the agency's own customers would accept such a model.

RE.A.L Lean+Agile radical. no offers, no contracts

Sven from sitegeist introduces us to his RE.A.L. Model. With a lot of verve and energy, he shows us how his agency no longer makes offers - and no contracts. How they blow up pitches and end up with a much happier agency and client. The presentation is gripping and captivating. It almost sounds like fiction to me. No offers? No contracts? A very progressive approach. It requires a good deal of courage on the one hand, the right mindset, the right employees and the right customers on the other. Sven has found the right mix with his agency sitegeist. A very inspiring presentation. Even if not all of it can be implemented directly, some of the points are very exciting and I'm sure I'll still be thinking about them.

And finally, my feedback on the 1st agency BarCamp as a short video.

Another session was about offers and contracts. Sven Ditz surprised us with his answer: sitegeist works without offers and without contracts. There was a lively exchange of views on the advantages and disadvantages and the extent to which customers are willing to accept such a model. It seems to work really well at sitegeist!

Overall, the impression was so positive that we have gladly agreed to support the organization of the next Agentur BarCamp in Hamburg in November 2016.
