Many SITES - One TYPO3

Over the past few years, medac has gradually created many smaller product websites. Each on its own server with its own TYPO3 CMS . This was optimized in 2023 as part of a consolidation project.

Water as the Connecting Element

Over the years, medac launched numerous small-scale product websites—each hosted on a separate server and maintained in its own TYPO3 CMS. In 2023, these fragmented setups were optimized through a major consolidation project.

Previously, 11 different product websites were operated independently. While the technical backend was the same—each built with TYPO3—every brand had its own unique identity, including distinct logos, color schemes, and design elements.

Challenges of the Old Setup

The original decentralized setup posed several significant challenges:

  • High maintenance effort:
Each website required separate updates, patches, and modifications—resulting in duplicated efforts, resource drain, and increased risk of errors.
  • Inconsistent user experience:
Varying designs and functionalities across websites created inconsistencies for customers and partners interacting with multiple medac products.
  • Poor scalability:
Deploying new features or content centrally was nearly impossible. Any updates needed to be rolled out individually—delaying innovation and response to market demands.

Consolidation into a Central TYPO3 System

To address these issues, all 11 product websites were merged into a single, powerful TYPO3 CMS—delivering substantial benefits:

  • Efficient management:
Updates and changes now happen once for all sites, drastically reducing time, effort, and the potential for errors.
  • Consistent UX:
All websites now share a unified design system and navigation model, strengthening brand identity and improving usability across medac’s digital presence.
  • Easy scalability:
New features, pages, and campaigns can be rolled out across all sites quickly and centrally—maximizing agility and market responsiveness.
  • Shared components:
When a new content element is developed—for example, a blog or news system—it becomes instantly available to all websites in their respective brand styles. A win-win for flexibility and consistency.

Backend Insights

Each product now has its own structured page tree within the TYPO3 backend, making it easy for editors to navigate and organize content.

Granular permissions:
One of the key advantages of this setup is its targeted rights management. Editors are granted access only to the page tree of their respective brand. This ensures content integrity across the system while empowering editors to manage their own areas efficiently.

Result: A Technically Advanced, User-Centric Platform

This project resulted in a centralized, future-proof TYPO3 system that significantly enhances medac’s digital content management capabilities.

By reducing maintenance overhead, improving the editorial workflow, ensuring a consistent brand experience, and enabling fast rollout of new features, the consolidated platform positions medac for long-term digital success.

We’re proud to have successfully implemented this important project and to have supported medac in optimizing its digital presence.
