The Pelikan and Herlitz brands in particular have a high brand awareness of more than 90 percent in Germany. Pelikan can look back on over 180 years of company history and is represented by 16 national and sales companies worldwide.

The Pelikan Brand

Over 180 years of experience and knowledge in writing and painting - that is Pelikan. Generations have grown up with the brand. In the global premium segment, Pelikan combines excellent quality, trend-setting innovations and educational concepts with perfect functionality and a clear design language. Pelikan is also a pioneer in development.

In cooperation with teachers and scientists, school products are created that promote a child's motor development and writing precision from the very beginning. In the "high-quality writing" segment, Pelikan also offers handmade writing instruments "Made in Germany".

The Project

Since the early 2000s, Pelikan has offered an exclusive online store for educators, which contained selected Pelikan brand products as well as teaching aids created specifically for the target group.

The project focused on replacing the existing eCommerce solution and developing a future-oriented platform tailored to the "teachers" target group. As part of the strategic reorientation of eCommerce, Pelikan attached great importance to using a modern, renowned and scalable standard solution as the basis. In addition, the store system should enable a target group-oriented approach. Pelikan opted for Shopware as a flexible and stable system.

Together with our contacts at Pelikan from marketing and IT, we began designing and implementing the new store on the basis of Shopware 5. In addition to the user experience of the teachers, the focus was also on a high degree of automation of the store processes on Pelikan's side. Together, a process definition was created as the basis for the store modification and interface development. For this purpose, the current processes were developed using use cases and the necessary interface calls were defined accordingly.
The basis for the connection to SAP was a Shopware interface extended by sitegeist, which was connected by Pelikan IT itself. The synchronization of customer and order data as well as the status update in Shopware are the technical core of the store. In addition, all product data displayed in the store is transferred from Pelikan's PIM system to the store via the interface.

For an improved user experience, a new navigation structure was jointly developed in accordance with the usability recommendations of sitegeist. Particular attention was paid to optimal user guidance, which was greatly optimized compared to the previous solution. In this way, the paths to the articles are kept as efficient as possible and it is made as easy as possible for the user to find the right product.

In addition to the easily accessible navigation concept, the user interface was adapted in line with the customer's specifications and corporate design. It is fully responsive and works on all common viewports. This guarantees a consistently high level of user-friendliness on all end devices in various resolutions.

Project Execution

In addition to implementing the coordinated look for all relevant viewports, the necessary configurations and the integration of various plugins were implemented together with Pelikan, which are used both for process optimization and for additional marketing features.

Due to the COVID-19 situation, the project was largely coordinated, designed and implemented remotely with the usual high quality. In addition to face-to-face meetings at the start of the project, many coordination meetings and training sessions for the various user groups took place largely remotely via our video conferencing system with screen sharing function. Thanks to our well-developed digital processes, we can therefore guarantee collaboration at all times, even under challenging conditions.
